Students in the southeast region of Clark County School District will get a treat on Saturday when a popular book character comes to life.

Marc Brown, author and illustrator of the "Arthur" books, will be part of an event happening at 1 p.m. at the Henderson Pavilion at Liberty Pointe, 200 S. Green Valley Parkway.

Admission is free, but children are encouraged to bring a gently used book to donate to Kids-to-Kids. This program is part of the APPLE partnership, a joint literacy effort between the city of Henderson, the southeast region of the CCSD, Henderson Public Libraries, the Henderson Community Foundation and local businesses and community partners.

"The Celebration of Reading is an opportunity to bring in authors students are familiar with," White Middle School Principal Danielle Miller said.

When the program began two years ago, R.L. Stine, author of the "Goosebumps" series, was brought in for the event.

Students can ask the authors questions, including "How did you become an author?" and "How do you get your ideas?"

"We're looking for anyone who wants to come," Miller said. "This is the connection between reading and writing."

"Through APPLE partnerships, famous children's authors visit Las Vegas about twice a year," said Cathy Rosenfeld, a member of the APPLE executive committee. "It's all about wanting to keep reading."
