Paula Masso Carnes has lived three career lives -- her first as a theology school-trained Bible teacher, the second as a public school reading teacher and her third as a patient advocate and biotech researcher for an investment firm. Carnes embarked on a fourth adventure with the publication of her collection of prose and verse "Fighting My War and Keeping My Peace."

Carnes used the book to come to terms with her diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome. "I came to appreciate the joke about CFS that says, "The good news is you don't die from it, and the bad news is you don't die from it," she said.

Carnes plans to sign copies of her book at the Sun City Summerlin Arts & Crafts Festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Oct. 6.
