WINCHESTER PLAYERS PLAN 'GUYS AND DOLLS, JR.'

The Winchester Players' production of "Guys and Dolls, Jr." is set for 7 p.m. Friday and noon and 5 p.m. Saturday at the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and seniors.

Stephen Rowe, 17, a junior at Valley High School, will play Sky Masterson, while Devin Alvarez, 13, plays Nathan Detroit. Splitting roles are Becky Lookingbill, 14, and Cabrina Gomez, 15, as Sarah Brown and Emily DeAngelo, 13, and Sydney Schafer, 12, as Miss Adelaide. Other cast members include Jon P. Smith, 15, as Nicely-Nicely Johnson, Alexandra Richardson, 15, as Harry the Horse and Forrest Hammond, 14, as Benny Southstreet.

The brother-and-sister team of Susan and Christopher Swanson leads the Winchester Players, the center's in-house theatrer troupe.

UNLVINO SET FOR THIS WEEKEND

The 34th annual UNLVino begins with a Bubble-Licious! event 7 p.m. Thursday at The Joint inside the Hard Rock Hotel and culminates in the UNLVino Grand Tasting at 2 p.m. Saturday inside the Paris Las Vegas.

UNLVino event tickets range in price from $75 to $125 and can be purchased by visiting www.unlvtickets.com or at the door.

TOUR OF SOLAR HOMES TO START AT SPRINGS PRESERVE

The Southern Nevada Solar Home Tour is planned for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, kicking off at the Springs Preserve, 333 S. Valley View Blvd.

The tour will include homes, schools and businesses featuring examples of renewable energy systems, water efficiency, alternative construction, green building and healthy interiors. Twelve sites will be open. The cost is $15 per standard vehicle. Hybrid/alternative fuel vehicles will receive a $5 discount.

FREE TOURS SCHEDULED AT MORELLI HOUSE

The Junior League of Las Vegas will open the doors of the historic Morelli House at 861 Bridger Ave. for free guided tours from 1 to 4 p.m. on May 17.

The tours will cover the history and the architectural highlights of the house and preservation project. The Morelli House is regarded as an accurate example of Las Vegas mid-century residential architecture and has been preserved for education and appreciation.

CITY GEARS UP FOR HELLDORADO

Local groups are encouraged to start planning parade entries for Helldorado Days, an event celebrating Las Vegas' Western roots.

The 2008 Helldorado Parade will take place at 7 p.m. on May 17. There is no entry fee for the parade. Car clubs, equestrian clubs, marching bands and walking groups are encouraged to submit applications.

The parade will take entries northbound on 4th Street from Hoover to Ogden avenues. Forms must be received no later than April 27. Applications can be downloaded at www.lasvegasnevada.gov/helldorado. For more information, call 229-6501.

PROFICIENCY EXAM SET FOR TODAY

All Clark County School District high school sophomores, as well as non-proficient juniors and seniors, will take the Nevada High School Proficiency Exam today.

All students must pass this test to earn a high school diploma.

To help prepare for the math portion of the exam, students can use an online tutorial at www.mathtest.ccsd.net.

CORTNEY MIDDLE SCHOOL TO HOLD EMPLOYEE REUNION

Cortney Middle School, 5301 E. Hacienda Ave., will hold an all-employee reunion at 1 p.m. on April 12 at Sunset Park, 2601 E. Sunset Road.

The event is open to all staff members who have worked at the school since its opening 10 years ago.

The cost is $10 per person, and children younger than 10 are free. The school will provide food.

HENDERSON INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL SPONSORS AWARDS

The Henderson International School is sponsoring the Meritas Awards, a program that grants 20 full-tuition scholarships for high school students entering grades 9-11 from public, parochial or private schools.

The scholarships are available for students with strong academic backgrounds and who are skilled particularly in one or more of the following: music, theater, dance, visual arts and athletics.

To apply, students must submit an official transcript from their current school, provide two letters of recommendation and a description of extracurricular involvement.

The application deadline is April 18.

CSN'S CHEYENNE CAMPUS TO HOST CAREER FAIR

The College of Southern Nevada's Cheyenne Campus will host a career fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 30 in the student lounge, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave.

SHOPPING TO EDUCATE PROGRAM GETS UNDER WAY

The Galleria at Sunset mall's Shopping to Educate program is under way and runs until Oct. 31. After shopping, customers who get their receipts stamped at the mall's guest services booth can apply points toward a school of the shopper's choice based on dollars spent.

Participating schools this year include: Cox, Charlotte Hill, Lamping, Schorr, Treem, Twitchell, Vanderburg, Walker and Wolff elementary schools, as well as Garret Middle School, Mt. Olive Lutheran and St. Joseph's.

The CCSD School Police Department's tip hot line can be reached by calling 799-0228. Call the school police to report suspicious activity at your school. Callers may remain anonymous.

HOMEWORK HOTLINE OFFERS HELP FOR STUDENTS

The Homework Hotline is open from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The program offers assistance to students with math problems or any other subject. Students should call 799-5111 to access the hot line.

PROGRESS NOTICES TO BE DISTRIBUTED MAY 2

In addition to the parent communication system available on school Web sites, progress reports/unsatisfactory notices will be distributed to students by the school.

If your child is absent from school when they are distributed, contact the school to make arrangements to receive the notice.

Due to this change of regulation, unsatisfactory notices will not be mailed home this year.

Dates for distribution of progress reports/unsatisfactory notices will be May 2.

SCHOLARSHIP LIST AVAILABLE ON WEB SITE

The CCSD Guidance and Counseling Services Web site includes a current updated list of local, state and national scholarships available for CCSD students.
