Question: Would you be so kind as to tell me if tangerine trees grow fruit in Vegas and if they need any shade. I bought one but I don't know if I should even bother planting it.
Hang on to your tangerine and try it. Some tangerines, such as the Satsuma type, have cold tolerance down to 22 degrees provided they are not in a windy location. Plant it in full sun and in a protected location if possible.
Use lots of compost in the planting hole when you plant it to help get it established quickly. Put it in a location with lots of radiated heat during winter months. The trees will become more tolerant to freezes as they get older.
The other thing you could do is grow it as a container plant and move it to a protected area during times when it might get too cold. The trees make excellent container plants but make sure the container is as large as you can manage.
