AFTER SCHOOL ALL STARS: Learning on the lake
Program gives valley students chance to sharpen science skills outside of the classroom

Janeth Hernandez drops a two-toned weighted disc into the chilly water at Lake Mead. She plays out a rope attached to the disc, which is marked with a black line every meter. Her classmates peer overboard down into the depths of the great man-made lake. Janeth counts out as each black mark sinks past the surface. "Ten meters. Eleven, 12..."

Her classmates call back: "I can still see it" and "Me too." At 17 meters, it finally becomes impossible to discern the disk.

Nursery lends a hand for school's garden
Paradise Elementary students plant flowers and vegetables

Paradise Elementary School gets by with a little help from its friends. Late last month, Star Nursery, UNLV, Pavestone and McCarthy Building Cos. came together to help the campus' smallest students build a garden.

Volunteers from the organizations built four flower-veggie beds at the school, 900 Cottage Grove Ave., after which pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes planted a mix of peppers, tomatoes, flowers and cilantro in the garden.
