ICE CREAM SOCIAL

* Have some sweets with your smarts during the It's Really Cool! ice cream social, 4-5 p.m. today at the Summerlin Library, 1771 Inner Circle Drive. For ages 6 and older. Kids can take a trip back to the 1920s, when Eskimo Pies were invented. Music also planned. This event is part of the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District's Big Read program. LEND A HAND

* Project: Volunteer is set for 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursday at the Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center, 101 N. Pavilion Center Drive. The free event is open to high school students interested in volunteering their time and nonprofit groups that seek assistance. 229-4645.

WATCHING FOR BIRDS

* A park ranger at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area leads participants ages 8 and older on desert excursions into the world of bird watching. BLOCK PARTY
