UNLV WELCOMES VISITING POET

Poet, novelist, short story writer and essayist Ana Castillo is set to read from her works 7 p.m. today in the Student Union Ballroom at UNLV.

The free, public presentation is part of the Just Voices program. Gerda Weissmann Klein kicked the series off with a visit on April 10. Next up, Dan Chaon is scheduled to speak April 25.

Just Voices is co-sponsored by the Clark County School District, the Dr. Miriam & Sheldon G. Adelson Family Foundation, the Southern Nevada Regional Professional Development Program, the Governor's Advisory Council on Education Relating to the Holocaust, the UNLV Department of English, Fontainebleau Resorts, UNLV Educational Outreach and the Nevada Partnership for Inclusive Education.

In addition to the UNLV reading, Castillo was invited to work with students at Rancho, Sierra Vista and Las Vegas high schools.

ALIANTE LIBRARY TO HOST SPRING BOOK FAIR

Aliante Library, 2400 W. Deer Springs Way, will hold a Spring Book Fair featuring Imagine Nation Books from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday.

The North Las Vegas bookstore will offer up to 75 percent off on books and merchandise at the event. For more information, call 839-2980.

AUTHORS SPREAD AWARENESS ABOUT AUTISM

Danielle Wendel and Dr. Lori Ernsperger plan to sign copies of their book "Girls Under the Umbrella of Autism Spectrum Disorder" from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the 10950 W. Charleston Blvd. Borders.

PUT A POEM IN YOUR POCKET

JAcE Magazine and Saxby's Coffee Shop plan to celebrate National Poem in your Pocket Day from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the 475 W. Craig Road Saxby's Coffee Shop.

April 17 is the first National Poem in Your Pocket day, announced by the Academy of American Poets. April also is National Poetry Writing Month.

Organizers suggest poets choose one poem and keep it in their pockets, ready to share. The Saxby's Coffee Shop event will offer poets a chance to read their pocket-poems. For more information, call 438-4800.

WRITER TO DISCUSS 'GATSBY'

The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District's Reading Las Vegas program plans an afternoon with Chris Bohjalian, author of "Midwives," an Oprah Winfrey book club selection, 2 p.m. on April 19 in the Clark County Library's main theater, 1401 E. Flamingo Road.

Bohjalian, the author of 11 novels, including his most recent New York Times bestseller, "The Double Bind," plans to discuss F. Scott Fitzgerald's influence in his writing. A book sale, signing and reception will follow the presentation.

Tickets for this event will be available at the Clark County Library box office starting at 1 p.m. the day of the event. Call 507-3459 for more information.

Other Big Read highlights set for this week include a performance of the Las Vegas Contemporary Dance Theater, 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the West Las Vegas Library, 951 W. Lake Mead Blvd. The show will include a discussion of the jazz era music and dance prevalent in "The Great Gatsby."

For a multimedia production titled "Gatsby and the Jazz Age," presented by Gary Anderson and Tony Sacca, visit the West Charleston Library, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd., 7 p.m. on Saturday. The West Charleston Library also plans to host a mob history panel 7 p.m. today.

TAKE IN HUGHES INTRIGUE

From 1966-70 Howard Hughes bought six Las Vegas hotels, two airports, a television station and huge tracks of real estate.

Geoff Schumacher, author of "Howard Hughes: Power, Paranoia & Palace Intrigue," will deliver a multimedia presentation on Hughes' Las Vegas years 7 p.m. May 8 at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road.

A book signing and reception will follow the presentation. The free event is co-sponsored by Stephens Press.

Published authors are invited to share their stories with readers and other writers at the 18Q Web site, www.eighteenquestions.com.

More than 100 authors have already answered the 18-question survey, which includes information on finding inspiration, writing styles, marketing techniques and advice for new writers.

Surveys are posted on the Web site and sent out as part of The Fabulist Flash, a weekly eZine put together by local writer Gregory A. Kompes.

LIBRARY PUTS OUT A CALL FOR AUTHORS

Published authors living in Nevada are invited to participate in Clark County Library events.

To participate, fill out a registration form at the information table at any of the local author programs at Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road.

Events open to local authors include the Local Authors Book Festival, the Meet The Authors monthly series and more.

The next Meet the Authors event, 6:30 p.m. April 30 in the library's Jewel Box Theater, is set to feature Brian Rouff and Laura Branchini in a program focused on gambling.
