TAX/RENT RELIEF, EXEMPTIONS OFFERED TO SENIORS

Staff members from the Clark County Assessor's Office will be on hand to answer questions and accept applications for the Senior Citizen's Property Tax/Rent Rebate and Property Tax Exemption programs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Meadows Mall, Sears Court, 4300 Meadows Lane.

To qualify for the rebate program, seniors must be age 62 by June 30. Exemptions may apply to real property taxes, manufactured home taxes or the government services tax portion of the applicant's vehicle registration fee.

New applicants must bring proof of age, as well as proof of six months of residency. Seniors must provide a copy of their Social Security 1099 form, proof of additional income and a copy of their IRS return.

Renters must supply copies of their rent receipts for 2007. Veterans should bring a copy of their discharge papers; surviving spouses should bring a copy of their spouse's death certificate.

LAS VEGAS IRIS SOCIETY TO HOST FLOWER SHOW

The Las Vegas Iris Society will hold its annual Spring Flower Show at 1 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday at the Nevada Garden Clubs Inc. Center, 3333 W. Washington Blvd., at Lorenzi Park. The event is free and open to the public.

CITY ACCEPTS APPLICATIONS FOR GRANTS OF UP TO $5K

The city of Las Vegas is accepting applications for Neighborhood Partners Fund Grants through April 25.

Grants of up to $5,000 are available for neighborhood improvement projects that are planned and implemented by neighborhood associations registered with the city's Neighborhood Services Department.

Applicants are required to match requested grant funds with volunteer labor, funding or other matching resources. Free how-to workshops on developing grant ideas are available.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUB TO CELEBRATE 10TH YEAR

The Andre Agassi Boys & Girls Club will hold a 10-year anniversary celebration with food, games, prizes and entertainment.

EXHIBIT TO FOCUS ON HISTORIC DOWNTOWN

As a part of Historic Preservation Week, the city of Las Vegas will host an exhibit focusing on the evolution of downtown by comparing historic and current images of downtown buildings.

A public reception for the event will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. on May 16 in the Bridge Gallery, on the second floor of Las Vegas City Hall, 400 Stewart Ave.

Brian Alvarez, curator of the Las Vegas News Bureau Photo and Film Archives, will be on hand to talk about the photo collection.

RAINBOW COMPANY PLANS OPEN AUDITION

The Rainbow Company Youth Theatre will be holding open auditions for youth ages 12 and older and adults at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Reed Whipple Cultural Center, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North.

The auditions will be for the troupe's original production of "The Great Cross-County Race," which will be the company's final production of the season.

The play will be performed daily at 7 p.m. on June 6-7 and 12-14 and at 2 p.m. on June 8, 14, and 15 in the Charleston Heights Arts Center's theater, 800 S. Brush St.

SPRINGS PRESERVE TO MARK EARTH DAY

An Earth Day celebration is planned at the Springs Preserve's museum, which will feature innovative sustainability exhibits from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at 333 S. Valley View Blvd.

Admission to the Springs Preserve is free for children younger than 5; $6.95 for children ages 5 to 17; $13.45 for senior citizens ages 65 and older, as well as students ages 18 and older; and $14.95 for adults. Annual passes are $75 per family, or $40 for individuals. Tickets are available online, as well as at the preserve.

CLARK COUNTY TO HOLD JOB FAIR

Multiple agencies have partnered to hold a government job fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 26 at the Clark County Government Center Rotunda, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway.

Participating sponsors include Clark County, the cities of Las Vegas and North Las Vegas, the Metropolitan Police Department, the Southern Nevada Health District, the Regional Transportation Commission, the Nevada Department of Public Safety and UNLV.

Computers will be available at the event to allow job seekers an on-site access to applications online for posted positions with the various agencies represented.

The Government Center also has free wireless access to the Internet for individuals desiring to bring a personal laptop computer. Informational sessions on topics such as the application process, employment testing and interviewing will be held at scheduled intervals throughout the day in conference rooms located on the first floor of the center.

LATIN PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE SETS PERFORMANCE

Dance to the music of Rick Arroyo and the Latin Percussion Ensemble from 8 to 11 p.m. on Saturday inside the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center's ballroom, 250 N. Eastern Ave.

The band plays salsa favorites, as well as original music. A pre-dance workshop is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The evening will include light refreshments, a no-host bar and a special presentation during intermission by Rafael Serrano's Salsa Negra Dance Company.

Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 on performance day and may be purchased by phone or at the community center.

A musician, composer and arranger, Arroyo was born in the Bronx, N.Y., and began his musical education playing piano, followed by drums, congas and vibraphone. He has performed professionally for 20 years. He and his band perform extensively throughout the valley.

PIANIST TO JOIN LAS VEGAS WIND QUINTET IN FREE CONCERT

Guest artist Barbara Riske joins clarinetist Dave Hawley, flutist Sherrie Parker, bassoonist Sam Pisciotta, horn player Doug Beasley, and oboe and English horn player Mika Brunson in a concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday in the Charleston Heights Arts Center theater, 800 S. Brush St.

Riske has performed with orchestras worldwide, including the Israeli Chamber Ensemble, Orquestra del Teatro Colon de Buenos Aires, the National Arts Centre Orchestra of Canada and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. She's been principal pianist with American Ballet Theatre, Eliot Feld's American Ballet Company and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Currently, she serves on UNLV's music faculty.

Happy Everything Day Celebration Planned

Celebrate all the holidays on one day.

Hunt for eggs; bob for apples and compete in a costume contest. Also scheduled -- a pumpkin slam, a pie-eating contest, a red, white and blue balloon toss, pool games and more.

HOME AND OUTDOOR LIVING SHOW SCHEDULED

EXHIBIT MERGES SOUND AND DRAWING

Georgia artist Craig Dongoski's work is on display through June 14 at the Reed Whipple Cultural Center, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North.

The exhibit features the artist's laboratory, or workshop experiments, made up of images that have been produced by way of sound.

AUCTION, OLD-FASHIONED BARBECUE SCHEDULED

FREE TOURS SCHEDULED AT MORELLI HOUSE

The Junior League of Las Vegas will open the doors of the historic Morelli House at 861 Bridger Ave. for free guided tours from 1 to 4 p.m. on May 17.

The tours will cover the history and the architectural highlights of the house and preservation project. The Morelli House is regarded as an accurate example of Las Vegas mid-century residential architecture and has been preserved for education and appreciation.

TWO-DAY FESTIVAL TO CELEBRATE HAWAIIAN CULTURE

MORMON FORT TO PAY TRIBUTE TO NEVADA STATEHOOD

Historian Michael Green will present the prologue to a re-enactment of President Lincoln's and Secretary of War Charles A. Dana's conversation regarding Nevada's statehood and the end of the Civil War.

The event is scheduled for 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday and noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historical Park, 500 E. Washington Ave.

Live choir music will be performed during the event, sponsored by Friends of the Fort to benefit the hungry. Lincoln and his wife will exit the Old Fort in a 1860s carriage.

A $1 entrance fee to the park includes all featured programs for adults. Children younger than 12 are free. For more information, call 486-3511.

City Gears up for Helldorado

Local groups are encouraged to start planning parade entries for Helldorado Days, an event celebrating Las Vegas' Western roots.

The 2008 Helldorado Parade will take place at 7 p.m. on May 17. There is no entry fee for the parade. Car clubs, equestrian clubs, marching bands and walking groups are encouraged to submit applications.

This year's entries will be judged in a number of categories and evaluated on their themes, as well as in their creativity in relation to celebrating the event and the city's 103rd birthday.

The parade will take entries northbound on 4th Street from Hoover to Ogden avenues. Forms must be received no later than April 27. Applications can be downloaded at www.lasvegasnevada.gov/helldorado. For more information, call 229-6501.

HELLDORADO DAYS HISTORY SEMINAR PLANNED

Participants can learn about the history of Helldorado, as the Springs Preserve, in partnership with the Nevada Humanities, hosts a seminar on the origins of the event.

The seminar takes place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on May 2 at the Springs Preserve's ORIGEN Experience theater.

Reservations are required. The cost is $12 for nonmembers, $10 for members and $6.50 for children ages 5 to 17. Students with ID pay $10.

Exhibit looks at landscapes

The Las Vegas Springs Preserve presents an exhibit by fine art photographer Nicholas A. Price.

Playground of the Gods provides a look at Nevada's landscapes via more than 30 traditionally hand-printed photographs of untouched rock displays. They depict faces and scenes portrayed in the rocks, clay and mountainsides of the Valley of Fire.

The Springs Preserve will display Playground of the Gods from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through April 30. For more information, call 822-7700.

CENTER HOSTS ART EXHIBITION

The works of 20 Las Vegas artists are on display in the biannual Occupied Space exhibition at the East Las Vegas Community Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave.

The center's hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. The display will be up through May 2009.

The free exhibition features works by Greg Allred, Katelyn Bessette, Mark Brandvik, Randa Bishop, Amanda Farrar, Robert M. Gurn, Merrilee Hort, Bonnie Kelso, Charles Morgan, Dolores J.
