Council chambers found all members in attendance April 22 at the North Las Vegas City Council meeting, which began with recognition of volunteer work and service.

Joel Cristobal Cisneros was honored for his service to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. The week of May 5-11 was proclaimed Public Service Recognition week to recognize all those who donate their time and energies to public service.

RELAY FOR LIFE

Additional recognition was given as May was designated Relay for Life of North Las Vegas Month.

North Las Vegas Relay for Life Chairwoman Daniele Moreno received a plaque from the City Council for her work with the event, which earned as much as $77,000 in 2007 for the American Cancer Society. The goal for the 24-hour walk, which takes place from 7 a.m. May 9 to 7 a.m. May 10 at Goynes Park, 3903 W. Washburn Road, is to raise as much as $80,000.

Moreno said the overnight aspect of the event is to reflect the fact that cancer does not sleep.

Councilman Robert Eliason pointed out Moreno's special connection with the event.

"Daniele won't tell you this, but 14 members in her immediate family have been affected by the disease," Eliason said.

CELEBRATE PROPERTIES LLC

During the public hearing, one item was submitted and approved in an application submitted by Celebrate Properties LLC for an amendment to change the current designation of single-family medium dwellings at the southwest corner of North 5th Street and Alexander Road to neighborhood commercial. Councilwoman Stephanie Smith voted against the amendment.

Attorney George Garcia, representing Celebrate Homes, said residents were consulted in neighborhood meetings.

ARMORED VEHICLES

Items approved on the business agenda included a purchase order to LENCO Armored Vehicles in an amount not to exceed $262,663, for a BearCat armored vehicle for the North Las Vegas Police Department.

GAMING IN NORTH LAS VEGAS

As the meeting ended, Councilwoman Shari Buck asked that city staff present a study on gaming in North Las Vegas.

"I'd like to know how many casinos might be appropriate and what their impact on the city would be," Buck said. "I would like to ask the city manager if he would bring that back to us and move forward on that proposal, because I think that's something we still need to do and that's timely and that might answer a lot of questions for the future."
