NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST TO SPEAK AT UNLV

Dan Chaon, author of "You Remind Me of Me" and "Fitting Ends," is set to read from his works 7 p.m. Friday in the Student Union Ballroom at UNLV.

The free, public presentation is part of the Just Voices program. Gerda Weissmann Klein and Ana Castillo kicked the series off with visits on April 10 and 22. The program is co-sponsored by the Clark County School District, the Dr. Miriam & Sheldon G. Adelson Family Foundation, the Southern Nevada Regional Professional Development Program, the Governor's Advisory Council on Education Relating to the Holocaust, the UNLV Department of English, Fontainebleau Resorts, UNLV Educational Outreach and the Nevada Partnership for Inclusive Education.

In addition to the UNLV readings, the authors were invited to work with Clark County School District students.

READING LAS VEGAS WELCOMES 'SPAMALOT' KING

The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District's Reading Las Vegas program plans an evening with John O'Hurley, 7 p.m. on Thursday in the Clark County Library's main theater, 1401 E. Flamingo Road.

O'Hurley, who stars in "Spamalot" at Wynn Las Vegas, will speak about his newest book, "Before Your Dog Can Eat Your Homework, First You Have to Do It."

The book is written as if the family's Maltese took pen in paw to write letters to O'Hurley's baby William.

Books will be available for purchase at the door. A reception and signing will follow the presentation. Call 507-3459 for more information.

LECTURE TO EXPLORE HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR

The UNLV Department of English and Nevada Humanities are co-sponsoring The Invention of Hollywood Glamour, a lecture by University of South Carolina Professor of Southern Letters David S. Shields at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Barrick Museum Auditorium.

DETECTIVE NOVELIST'S TOUR COMING TO LAS VEGAS

Alexander McCall Smith plans to visit the Clark County Library's main theater, 1401 E. Flamingo Road, at 2 p.m. on Sunday on his national book tour to promote the ninth book in his "No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" series, "The Miracle of Speedy Motors."

A book sale, signing and reception will follow the presentation.

TAKE IN HUGHES INTRIGUE

How much of a part did Howard Hughes play in the making of modern Las Vegas? Find out when Geoff Schumacher, author of "Howard Hughes: Power, Paranoia & Palace Intrigue," delivers a multimedia presentation on Hughes' Las Vegas years, 7 p.m. May 8 at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road.

A book signing and reception will follow the presentation.

The free event is co-sponsored by Stephens Press.

LIBRARY PUTS OUT A CALL FOR AUTHORS

Published authors living in Nevada are invited to participate in Clark County Library events.

To participate, fill out a registration form at the information table at any of the local author programs at Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road.

Events open to local authors include the Local Authors Book Festival, the Meet The Authors monthly series and more.

The next Meet the Authors event, 6:30 p.m. April 30 in the library's Jewel Box Theater, is set to feature Brian Rouff and Laura Branchini in a program focused on gambling.

Published authors are invited to share their stories with readers and other writers at the 18Q Web site, www.eighteenquestions.com.

More than 100 authors have already answered the 18-question survey, which includes information on finding inspiration, writing styles, marketing techniques and advice for new writers.

Surveys are posted on the Web site and sent out as part of The Fabulist Flash, a weekly eZine put together by local writer Gregory A. Kompes.
