Bonanza High School's first graduating class is coming home. As part of its 30-year reunion, Bonanza's class of 1978 will attend the high school's homecoming game, amid a weekend of activity.

Classmates Joe Smith and Linda (Brownlee) Painter are spearheading the drive to gather alumni from the 1978 class, and hope to have at least 100 people at the festivities.

"We're trying to get everyone together and just have a really great time," Painter said.

The 30th-year graduates plan to attend the homecoming game at 7 p.m. on Oct. 10 at Bonanza, 6665 W. Del Rey Ave., before going to the RoadRunner at 9820 W. Flamingo Road for appetizers and drinks. Earlier in the day, the group also is invited to the school's homecoming assembly at 12:30 p.m.

"It was exciting to go to a new school because it was smaller than the others at that time," Painter said.

From 7 to 11 p.m. on Oct. 11, there will be a semi-formal dinner inside ballrooms A and D at the Suncoast, 9090 Alta Drive. There will be a family picnic from noon to 4 p.m. on Oct. 12 in the gazebo area at Queensridge North, 310 Regents Park. The area includes a large, covered gazebo with grills, a refrigerator, a sink, drinking fountains, restrooms, a basketball court, a children's play area and tennis courts.

Painter and Smith want to have as many graduates as possible at the event, in an effort to celebrate their class.

"I had made a lot of friends there," Smith said.

The cost to attend all of the reunion activities is $125 per person, and all money is due by Sept. 1.

"It's going to be a really good time," Smith said.
