APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE FOR YARD RENOVATION GIVEAWAY

The Nevada State Contractors Board and the Nevada Landscape Association are taking applications from homeowners for their Operation Green service project. They'll award one Southern Nevada homeowner with a free yard renovation. The winner will be chosen based on income, need and special circumstances. Applications will be accepted through Aug. 29.

REGISTRATION TO START AUG. 19 FOR ARTS CLASSES

Registration for arts and community classes through the city of Las Vegas opens on Aug. 19, with a variety of classes available for all ages. The course list includes several types of dance classes, instrument and vocal lessons, ceramics, theater, raku and visual arts. The city's Arts and Community Events Division offers six-week class sessions from Sept. 9 through Oct. 18 at each of its four cultural arts centers: Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St.; East Las Vegas Community and Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave.; Reed Whipple Cultural Center, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North; and the West Las Vegas Arts Center, 947 W. THEATER FESTIVAL OPEN TO SENIORS

Seniors are invited to go on an overnight trip to the Utah Shakespearean Festival in Cedar City, Utah. The bus leaves at 8 a.m. on Oct. 1 from the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive, and returns at 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 2. The two-day trip includes three play orientations and three performances; "Gaslight," "Julius Caesar" and "Moonlight and Magnolias."

KIDS ACTIVITIES SET FOR FRIDAY AT THE LIBRARY

Families are invited to enjoy an afternoon of food, prizes and fun at the Clark County Library's Saturday for Kids event beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday (that's Friday, not Saturday) at the library at 1401 E. Flamingo Road.

PLAY POKER FOR A GOOD CAUSE

HELP of Southern Nevada will host a no-limit, $300 buy-in Texas Hold'em poker tournament on Aug. 23 at the Palms, 4321 W. Flamingo Road.

Registration starts at 6 p.m., and play starts at 6:30 p.m. Cocktails and hors d'oeuvres will be served throughout the evening.

The grand prize is a $10,000 seat at the 2009 World Series of Poker. Individuals who do not play can attend for a donation of $50.

Proceeds will benefit HELP, a nonprofit that works with low-income individuals and families to help them become more self-sufficient.
