FREE BOOKS PROVIDED TO FIRST-YEAR TEACHERS

The Mandalay Bay and Clark County READS are providing free books to first-year elementary school teachers in the Clark County School District at 5 p.m. on Aug. 25 in front of the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay, 3950 Las Vegas Blvd. South. First-year teachers are invited to fill a bag of free, new and gently used books, as well as free school supplies for their classrooms.

IMMUNIZATION CLINICS SET FOR BACK TO SCHOOL

There will be immunization clinics for back-to-school shots from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. on Aug. 21 at the Cambridge Family Health Center, 3900 Cambridge Ave., Suite 102.

NEVADA CONNECTIONS ACADEMY TO HOST INFORMATION SESSIONS

Nevada Connections Academy is hosting information sessions on Thursday for the 2008-09 school year at 11 a.m. at the Hampton Inn and Suites, 4280 S. Grand Canyon Drive, and at 6:30 p.m. at the West Flamingo Senior Center, 6255 W. Flamingo Road.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL FAIRS SET

The Clark County School District will host back-to-school fairs to help prepare students and parents for the 2008-09 academic year.

Fairs will be held on Saturday at the Boulevard Mall, 3528 S. Maryland Parkway, and on Aug. 23 at the Galleria at Sunset mall, 1300 W. Sunset Road, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at both locations.

In addition, immunizations will be offered from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the fair sites.

ORGANIZATIONS SEEKS SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR STUDENTS

The Salvation Army is collecting school supplies for distribution on Aug. 25. The organization is looking for backpacks, notebooks, pens, pencils, lunch boxes, thermos bottles and other school items. To donate, call 870-4430.

Also, HELP of Southern Nevada is accepting new backpacks and school supplies for children of all age groups returning to school in August. Supplies needed are backpacks, crayons, pens, pencils, colored pencils, glue sticks, notebooks, folders, loose leaf paper, scissors, small sandwich bags, calculators, Kleenex and hand sanitizer. FOUNDATION AWARDS NEARLY $100,000 IN GRANTS

The Nevada Public Education Foundation has awarded nearly $100,000 in grants to organizations and entities throughout Nevada. Five of those grants, totaling more than $47,000, went to organizations and institutions in Southern Nevada.

A $15,000 Ready for Life grant was awarded to Nevada Partners. The Clark County Department of Juvenile Justice received a Ready for Life grant totaling $20,000, and the foundation also granted three Nevada Access grants to Southern Nevada schools and organizations, including a $1,403 grant to support Las Vegas High School's College Career Week. Other grant recipients included UNLV's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, which received a $6,162 grant in support of its career symposium, and the College of Southern Nevada, which received a $5,000 grant to support its science and technology expo.

THREE TOURO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS WIN SCHOLARSHIPS

Three medical students from Touro University Nevada have won national scholarship awards from the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians. Stephanie Morbeck, Courtenay Morrow and Anna-Marie Schuster were among 19 students selected nationally for the 2008 awards. Each winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

BONANZA'S FIRST GRADUATING CLASS TO REUNITE IN OCTOBER

Bonanza High School's class of 1978 is celebrating its 30-year reunion Oct. 10 through 12. The group plans to attend Bonanza's homecoming game at 7 p.m. on Oct. 10 at the school at 6665 W. Del Rey Ave.

GROUPS SEEKING HOST FAMILIES FOR STUDENTS

Host families, as well as single parents, are needed to provide food, a bed and a home for one or two semesters starting in late August. Educational Merit Foundation high school students are between the ages of 15 and 18, have medical insurance, spending money for their personal expenses and expect to share their host family's daily life, including household responsibilities. They speak English, are well-screened and eager to experience life in America.

Hayden Elementary School registering students

Hayden Elementary School, 150 W. Rome Blvd., is registering students for the 2008-09 school-year. Kindergarten students must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 30, and students must reside in the school's attendance zone. Hayden's main office will be open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration documents need to be provided at the time of registration. Student registration documents include student's original birth certificate, immunization record, parent or guardian driver's license or picture identification and one proof of address (gas, power, or water bill or lease agreement or mortgage document).

There will be immunization clinics for back-to-school shots from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Wal-Mart store on 1400 S. Lamb Blvd.; from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 19 at the Martinez Academy of Health, 350 E. Judson; and at the San Martin de Porres Medical Clinic, 1611 E. Charleston Blvd. On Aug. 20 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., there will be a physicals and immunizations offered at the Huntridge Teen Clinic, 2100 S. Maryland Parkway; and there will be immunizations offered on Aug. 22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hope Pediatric Centers, 6592 N. Decatur Blvd., and on Aug. 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Wal-Mart Store, 4350 N. Nellis Blvd.
