CURRENT DESERT LANDSCAPING SHOULD GET PRAISE, TOO

My gripe is desert landscaping.

When we moved here 20 years ago, we decided on desert landscaping. We love it.

The water company came out with a contest for desert landscaping ("SNWA Landscape Awards: Going water smart," View Neighborhood Newspapers, May 27). I found out that first you have to have grass then you have to tear out your grass and plant desert landscaping.

It cost us well over $5,000 to put in.

For 20 years, the water company could say "Thanks, Walt."

LETTER ABOUT FREE GOLF A RIDICULOUS ARGUMENT

Re: Richard Masters' letter, "Free Day of Golf, Absolutely Absurd" (Letters to the Editor, View Neighborhood Newspapers, July 22):

To Mr. Masters: You seem like the typical country club egotist who wears a pink IZOD shirt and drives a Jag. The world is full of you stuffed-shirted, "I'm-better-than-you-since-I'm-richer-than-you" types. I'll bet you even voted for the clown we have in the Oval Office.

Perhaps it escaped your superior magnificence, but if it weren't for the proletariat, riff-raff, common folk that aren't rich who maintain your course, you wouldn't have one. Didn't think about that, did you genius?

Personally, I think golf is a ridiculous sport but not as ridiculous as the many acres of land set aside so that pompous and bombastic morons such as yourself can play the part of a pillar of the community. Kids should have such land for parks.

FORMER GROCERY STORE WAS DISGUSTING, UNSAFE

Re: Replacement Grocery Store ("Grocery store to serve need in West Las Vegas area," View Neighborhood Newspapers, July 22):

Vons had to leave the neighborhood because of losses. Every time I was in the store I saw open half eaten food or someone stuffing something in their pockets when I went shopping.

They don't deserve a store if they can't control their kids and teenagers.

GROCERY STORE CLOSURE DUE TO POLITICIANS' ACTIONS

Regarding your article, "Shopping center loses anchor, other tenants" in the July 22 issue of the Spring Valley View, I attribute the main cause as being our politician's irresponsible allowance of uncontrolled growth in Las Vegas.

While it's good for a city to grow, it's not good to grow so fast that a five or ten year old shopping center all of a sudden becomes outdated because of numerous new commercial developments that are continually being built. Case in point, Albertsons is opening a new store further to the west.

As long as uncontrolled growth continues businesses will suffer the same fate. Major anchors will not renew there leases but elect to move elsewhere. More vacancies will result. Foot traffic will decline and urban blight will gradually take over. Urban blighted areas have higher rates of crime that is devastating to the surrounding residential community. This is already occurring around relatively new shopping centers in parts of Las Vegas.

Land in Las Vegas is inexpensive compared to other cities so greedy developers continue to build new centers even though the population base can't support the businesses in the existing centers. People flock to the brand new nearby shopping centers. Most businesses fail because they can't afford to sink additional capital to start all over in a brand new location. Livelihoods and jobs are lost.

I say don't blame it all on rising gas prices, the sub prime mortgage dilemma or the falling stock market. Blame it on the stupid politicians who think that prosperity is based on the more that Las Vegas builds the more sales tax and property tax will be generated. What a joke.

CONSIDERATION SHOULD BE GIVEN TO ALL RESIDENTS

I live at The Coves, which is located on Tenaya Way just north of Westcliff Drive. I have a neighbor, Marie Kirker, who is very knowledgable about the Tenaya Way bridge ("Tenaya Way bridge to ease traffic at interchanges," View Neighborhood Newspapers, July 29), and in 2003 she and I went down to the Department of Public Works and spoke to the director at that time regarding the fact that we felt that we needed a light on Pirates Cove and Tenaya Way so that all the people living in the Coves would be able to get in and out of our complex since our only entrance and exit is on Tenaya Way. We were told not to even consider that we would get a light there because there was a light at Westcliff Drive and Tenaya Way. At that time, we saw the design portion and asked the people at the Department of Public Works if they have been out to see the site so that they would know what we were talking about, and they said that they had not been out to the site.

We just recently learned that as a result of our meeting that the city now has a planned right of way running adjacent to The Coves' property line, running from Tenaya Way and ending at Westcliff Drive. This right of way would be helpful, but a light is still necessary for us to exit our complex.

At the present time, before the construction begins, when we go west on Pirates Cove, we have a difficult time to get onto Buffalo Drive

We are concerned that the additional traffic on Tenaya Way will make it very difficult for us to enter and exit our complex without a light or four way stop sign at Pirates Cove.

We know that this project will start this fall, and even though we are not looking forward to the Tenaya bridge, we realize that the traffic needs to be relieved at the Rainbow Boulevard and Buffalo Drive interchanges.

All we are asking is that consideration be given to all of the residents living in this area so that we are able to get in and out of our complex.

Thank you for your article on this subject.
