READY FOR A HOEDOWN

* Turn off that city slicker music and enjoy a square dance and hoedown from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday in the ballroom of the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave. Participants will learn a few new dances and enjoy some old favorites. $3 per person; free for kids ages 5 and under. Light refreshments to be served. 229-1515.

MEN'S HOOPS

* Lace up your sneakers -- registration is under way for the Doolittle Community Center's adult men's and church basketball leagues. Teams must have players ages 18 and older to sign up. Games start on Aug. 19 and 23 at the center's gymnasium, 1950 N. J St. Teams will play an eight-week season. Registration is $250 per team, plus officials' fees. 229-6374.

FUNNY STORIES

* Storyteller and author Kendall Haven will deliver his comical stories during a program set for 4 to 5 p.m. Friday at the Las Vegas Library, 833 Las Vegas Blvd. North. For kids up to age 11. Call 507-3500 or visit www.lvccld.org.

ART RECEPTION

* A reception is set for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday for an Opportunity Village Art Enrichment Program display titled Through Our Eyes, up from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday through Oct. 1 at the Lloyd D. George-U.S. Federal Courthouse, 333 Las Vegas Blvd. South. The reception will take place in the courthouse lobby. Artists and staff members from the Art Enrichment Program will be available to answer any questions and discuss the artwork. 880-4096.
