MUSICAL JOURNEY: Celebrating a milestone

The Community Lutheran Church is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year with a number of special events and performances this weekend. For senior pastor Dr. Mark Wickstrom and minister of music and worship Greg Davis, it's simply an extension of their usual work; getting the good word out with every resource they can muster.

The church was started in 1973 in a relatively empty corner of the valley, and 35 years later, the city has spread out well past the church. In that time Community Lutheran has had only two pastors, Ray Christenson, who established the church and retired in 2005, and Wickstrom, who came to Las Vegas after 20 years as an executive pastor at a large Lutheran church in Minnesota.

St. Thomas hike is a lesson in history

In the extreme northern section of the Overton Arm of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, now high and dry, lie the remains of a once-thriving pioneer settlement. The town of St. Thomas was founded in 1865 but only lasted until 1938 when the waters of Lake Mead, created by the construction of Boulder Dam (the one we now call Hoover Dam) rose so high they drowned the town.

Although the waterline has dropped enough a few times since then to allow a glimpse of this miniature Atlantis, the water levels are now at a historic low, making a trip to St. Thomas the easiest it has been since 1938, and the driest.
