FOSTER CARE: A place to rebuild
United Methodist Social Ministries remodels building for family visitations

Loyce Smith heard about the Clark County Department of Family Services' tremendous need for visitation space for foster children and their biological families, so she urged United Methodist Social Ministries, where she works as executive director, to remodel an abandoned modular building into a family room.

The Fostering and Faith Visitation Room, located at 4412 S. Maryland Parkway, opened two months ago as family services' first satellite visitation center. Mark Lissor, the county's visitation supervisor, said he hopes this is the first of a handful of other satellite visitation centers to open around the valley.

UNLV artists get real-world exposure at downtown gallery

Inside The Arts Factory, on the first level, there's a gallery dedicated to the students of UNLV. The white walls support student work, while at the same time giving the pieces an opportunity to be seen by the community at large, not just that of the university.

The Vagus Nerve Fine Art Gallery is home to two classes of shows. Jerry Schefcik's advanced gallery practices class uses the space for a course project, and the UNLV student government publication The Vagus Nerve exhibits its submissions there.
