Question: I just moved into a home in Las Vegas and was wondering how I could get my own color-coded recycling bins that many of my neighbors use for curbside pickup. Also, what do the different colors mean?
-- Las Vegas
According to Bob Coyle, area president of Republic Services, single-family resident customers that have curbside garbage collection may call to request three recycling bins for no additional charge. Bins come in sets of red, white and blue, with each color distinguishing the type of acceptable recyclable -- red bins are for aluminum, tin and plastics; white bins are for paper, newspaper, magazines, junk mail and telephone books; and blue bins are for glass. The bins are not available to apartment or condo communities that have garbage Dumpster service.
"Republic Services picks up the curbside recycling one day every other week," said Coyle. "The recycling collection day will depend upon which route the resident is assigned to. The route letter group can be found on the customer's invoice or by calling 735-5151. If they know their route letter group, customers can print out their recycling calendar by visiting www.republicservicesvegas.com."
According to Coyle, nearly 20 percent of Clark County residents recycle once a month.
And, if customers find that their recycling needs exceed the capacity of the three bins, "Republic Services will happily supply you with an additional set," Coyle said.
