Question: We have a 7-year-old apricot tree that suddenly has starting bleeding. It is only on two branches but is quite substantial. Can you tell me what I need to do?
I would recommend that you try to give these limbs that are bleeding as much protection from the sun as possible. Make sure the canopy of your tree is full and provides good shade on those limbs when in leaf.
Secondly, you might consider painting these limbs with diluted white latex paint. Dilute the paint 50/50 with water, thoroughly mix it and paint or spray on the trunk and limbs exposed to direct sunlight. These would be primarily the south and west exposed parts of the trunk and limbs. If this is due to sun damage, the oozing sap will predominate from these locations.
If the bark is firmly attached to the tree, leave it alone. If the bark is loose, then cut it away from these damaged areas.
