The Rowe Elementary School Service Club, 4338 S. Bruce St., recently made holiday cards for two nursing homes. A few members of the club accompanied first-grade classes to the homes to deliver the cards and sing songs to the nursing home residents.
UNLV PROFESSOR RECEIVES AWARD
UNLV professor Larry Ashley recently received the Mel Schulstad Professional of the Year award from the National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors. Ashley has more than 30 years of experience in substance abuse and trauma, and has a special interest on the impact of war on soldiers worldwide.
CCSD BOARD OF SCHOOL TRUSTEES TO MEET
The CCSD Board of School Trustees will host a meeting at 4 p.m. on Jan. 24.
REGISTRATION OPEN FOR CSN CLASSES
Registration is open through Friday for classes at CSN. Classes begin on Jan. 22. Registration is available via the school's Web site at www.csn.edu/admissions. There are three locations in the valley, at 6375 W. Charleston Blvd., at 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave., and at 700 College Drive.
MAGNET SCHOOLS INFORMATION MEETINGS SET
The CCSD will host parent information meetings for magnet schools for elementary students at 10 a.m. and at 6 p.m. on Jan. 23 at Cashman Center, 850 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Meetings for secondary students will be held at 11 a.m. and at 7 p.m.
Another meeting for elementary students will be held at 6 p.m. on Jan. 29 at Durango High School, 7100 Dewey Drive, and at 7 p.m. for secondary students.

GATE PROGRAM EARNS RECOGNITION
The Vanderburg Elementary School Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program, 2040 Desert Shadow Trail, was selected as a member of the O Ambassadors Program, a joint project of Oprah Winfrey's Angel Network and Free the Children.
CORONADO STUDENT WINS ART CONTEST
The Public Education Foundation and the CCSD's School-Community Partnership program selected McKenzie Wallace, a Junior at Coronado High School, 1001 Coronado Center Drive, as the first-place winner of its annual Holiday Art Contest.
SCHOOL MATTERS TO BE ON VEGAS PBS
The CCSD, in cooperation with Vegas PBS, will conduct the next School Matters program on Jan. 31. During the live program, school district officials and board members will address topics and respond to questions submitted by viewers.
The show will air from 8 to 9 p.m. on Vegas PBS, Channel 10, on Cox Cable.
