The $16 million Oquendo Center for Clinical Education is beginning to take shape at Eastern Avenue and Oquendo Road. AMATEUR BOXING EVENT TO RAISE FUNDS

Barry's Boxing Center, 2664 S. Highland Drive, and Las Vegas Boxing Club will present a live amateur boxing event as a nonprofit fundraiser to support youth and future stars of boxing on Saturday and Sunday at the Tropicana in the South Pacific Ballroom.

The event will feature top teams and boxers from Mexico, Las Vegas and Canada, among others. Doors open at 4 p.m. on Saturday; boxing begins at 5 p.m. On Sunday, doors open at 1 p.m.; boxing will begin at 2 p.m. Planned appearances include Floyd Mayweather, Hasim Rahman and Jorge Paez, among other top names. There also will be a silent auction of boxing memorabilia.

General admission is $30 for both days or $20 for one day. A VIP ringside table or VIP ringside seat also are available, as well as a regular or single table. Contact Dawn Barry, president of Barry's Boxing Center, at 368-2696, or Robert Johnson, president of Las Vegas Boxing, at 499-1092.

THE CAPITOL STEPS TO PERFORM AT UNLV

The Capitol Steps, who perform political satire songs, will perform at Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall on the campus of UNLV on Thursday at 8 p.m.

The group started out as U.S. Senate staffers lampooning the people and places that employed them. It now has 27 albums and has been featured on network and public television. The group also is a staple on National Public Radio.

Tickets are $20 and $18 for seniors, military personnel, students and persons with disabilities. Call 895-2787 or 739-3267.

ROLLER DERBY TEAM TO OPEN SEASON AT COMMERCIAL CENTER

The Sin City Neanderdolls, who compete in the Fabulous Sin City Roller Girls league, will take on the St. Brawli Girls of Virginia, who compete in the Dominion Derby Girls league, at the Las Vegas Roller Hockey Rink at 953 E. Sahara Ave. at 8 p.m. on Saturday. Doors open at 7 p.m.

The rink is located in the southwest corner of Commercial Center. This will mark the beginning of the third season for Las Vegas' Women's Flat Track Derby Association team. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door, and it is recommended that you bring your own folding chair.
