Zachary Quine, 21, graduated from UNLV in December with a bachelor of science in physics.

He was named an outstanding graduate, someone who went above and beyond to achieve great things.

Quine, son of Sheri Yadgir and Michael Quine of Las Vegas, began attending Green Valley High School at age 13 after beginning school a year early and skipping seventh grade.

A varsity football player, he graduated from high school with honors at age 16, while battling and overcoming a type of cancer called Ewing's sarcoma during his senior year.

As a student of UNLV's Department of Physics, Quine performed high-level research with UNLV faculty at Argonne National Laboratory in Argonne, Ill., worked on a laser spectroscopy project and he co-authored at least five peer-reviewed papers, one of which he presented at a multi-university research conference.

Quine currently is being recruited by the Los Alamos National Laboratory and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory.

Joshua Jeffreys, 17, recently graduated from Basic Military Training at Lackland Air Force Base near San Antonio, Texas.

Jeffreys attended Rancho High School's Magnet Aviation Program before transferring to Cimarron-Memorial High School, where he graduated in 2007.

Jeffreys currently is stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he is training to become an aviation weapons specialist.

He is the son of Bob and Laura Jeffreys of Las Vegas.
