LIT'L SCHOLAR ACADEMY PLANS SUMMER CAMPS

Lit'l Scholar Academy's annual summer camps run through Aug. 22.

The camp is divided into two programs. Full-day and half-day is for children 18 ages months and older and lasts from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Sessions are available at both of Lit'l Scholar's campuses, 8961 Hillpointe Road and 1951 S. Rainbow Blvd.

HOST FAMILIES SOUGHT FOR EXCHANGE STUDENTS

Youth For Understanding is seeking families to host foreign exchange students for the next school year.

Participants have their own insurance, spending money, cannot drive and speak English.

Families must provide room, board and a safe home environment. This year's group of exchange students recently hiked the Grand Canyon with the Youth For Understanding organization.

INSTITUTE, SIEMENS FOUNDATION SELECT SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

The Nevada Cancer Institute and Siemens Foundation selected Nevada nursing and health care students as winners of the 2008 Siemens Oncology Scholarship Program.

Siemens provided $100,000 to the institute in 2007 to fund a four-year scholarship program. Annually, scholarships up to $5,000 will be awarded.

The 2008 Oncology Scholarship recipients are Doris Akuette, University of Southern Nevada; Jaime Chartier, Shannon Green and Maraya Morse, UNLV; and Joseph Villaluz, University of Nevada, Reno.

ROCK BAND CAMP TO START ON MONDAY

Camp Rocks!, an education-based rock band camp for young musicians ages 9 through 18, starts on Monday .

Tuition is $299 per student for the two-week program.

EXCHANGE STUDENT RECEIVES KEY TO CITY

During the June 19 Las Vegas City Council meeting, Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman presented a key to the city to Jens Koschel, an exchange student from Berlin, Germany, for outstanding community service.

Koschel has participated in numerous volunteer projects during his stay in Las Vegas, including food drives, reading to local kindergarten students, organizing fundraising efforts for the Clark High School band and volunteering for several political events.

fifth street school students sought for rededication

The city of Las Vegas Redevelopment Agency is searching for students of the Fifth Street School when it was the Las Vegas Grammar School from 1936 until 1966.

The agency will recognize these individuals during a rededication event, to be held in the fall to celebrate the building's renovation.
