TOP CHEF TO LEAD COOKING CLASS

Executive chef Heinz Lauer plans to host a cooking class called Ride Around the World at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts Las Vegas, 1451 Center Crossing Road.

GENETIC COUNSELOR TO SPEAK AT MEETING

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Southern Nevada plans its monthly meeting at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.

The main program will be Our Heritage and Our Health -- The Importance of Being Informed. Gary Frohlich, a certified genetic counselor of the Genzyme Corp., will provide up-to-date information on the genetic conditions that occur more frequently in Jewish individuals of Ashkenazi descent.

GROUP RAISES $10K FOR CHILDREN'S HEART FOUNDATION

The Darin Lifetime Group held an afternoon benefit concert on May 4 in honor of musician Bobby Darin, raising $10,583 to benefit the Children's Heart Foundation.

The Nevada-based foundation lends support to children and families who suffer or are affected by heart problems. Because of the damage rheumatic fever did to his heart as a child, Bobby Darin had a special interest in children with heart problems.

MEETING TO ADDRESS WASHBURN PROJECT

The city of Las Vegas has planned a neighborhood meeting for 6:30 p.m. today at the Centennial Hills Community Center, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive. The topic will be the Washburn-Alpine Ridge project, a still-being-planned city industrial facility proposed for the area at West Ann Road and the Las Vegas Beltway.

EXHIBIT FEATURES PIECES FROM FINE ART COLLECTIONS

The Las Vegas Art Museum, 9600 W. Sahara Ave., is showing Las Vegas Collects Contemporary, featuring works of contemporary art on loan from some of Southern Nevada's privately held fine art collections.

Artists featured in the show include Jean-Michel Basquiat, Uta Barth, Dan Flavin, Andreas Gursky, Michael Heizer, Damien Hirst, David Hockney, Donald Judd, Jason Martin, Takashi Murakami, Ken Price, David Reed, Gerhard Richter, Ed Ruscha, Venske & Spänle and Andy Warhol.

The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. General admission is $6 for adults, $5 for senior citizens ages 55 and older and $3 for students ages 13 and older. Children ages 12 and younger enter free when accompanied by an adult.

140 WOMEN TAKE PART IN REDUCED-COST MAMMOGRAMS

Nevada Cancer Institute reported that 140 uninsured Nevada women over the age of 40 took advantage of its reduced-cost $50 screening mammograms, held May 5 through 16 in honor of Mother's Day and National Women's Health Week.

The institute uses digital mammography that is geared to significantly improve the capability to diagnose breast cancer earlier in some women.

$20K RAISED FOR CHILD FOCUS AT JW MARRIOTT EVENT

The fifth annual Hats Off to Child Focus Mother's Day Tea, held at JW Marriott on May 10, saw more than 400 people in attendance. The event raised over $20,000 for Child Focus.

HOSPICE SEEKS HELPING HANDS

Hospice of Las Vegas, a Medicare-certified hospice agency, is recruiting volunteers to help with administrative work and direct patient contact.

TRUSTEE RECEIVES AWARD

The Equity & Diversity Education Department recently presented the Flying Eagle's Award to School Board Trustee Larry Mason for his commitment to all students, with special sensitivity to students of color.

Mason was honored as an exceptional role model and for his support of students whose country and language differ from those of their peers.

SAFEKEY, THE EDGE PROGRAMS HOLD WALK-IN REGISTRATION

Clark County Parks and Recreation's Safekey and The Edge programs will hold walk-in registration now through June 30 for before- and after-school recreation programs held at participating elementary and middle school sites. Registration at participating schools is held in the Safekey area from 7 to 8:30 a.m. and from 3 to 6 p.m.

Safekey is a before- and after-school program sponsored by the Clark County Parks and Recreation Community Enrichment Division. Safekey will be held in more than 70 Clark County School District elementary schools during the 2008-09 school year. The Edge is an after-school program for middle school students attending Lawrence, Silvestri, Sawyer and Faiss middle schools. Program hours are typically from 7 to 8:30 a.m. for elementary students, and from school dismissal to 6 p.m. for both elementary and middle school programs. Students must attend Safekey or The Edge programs at the school they attend.

Financial assistance may be available to qualifying families. Information and applications can be requested directly through the State of Nevada Childcare Assistance Division by calling 387-0985. VEGAS PBS TO AIR COOKING SCHOOL SERIES

The Vegas PBS cooking school series "ChefClass" airs on Channel 10 at 3:30 p.m. every Saturday from now through Aug. 9. The show takes viewers inside The International Culinary Schools of the Art Institutes to learn how to cook like professionals. Each episode features a chef-instructor teaching cooking techniques, such as roasting, grilling, braising and sautéing.
