SPOTLIGHT ON: GAETANO'S

10271 S. EASTERN AVE., 361-1661

A good restaurant must have good food and a pleasant atmosphere. At Gaetano's, the good food is a given thanks to Gaetano Palmeri. He also is responsible for the atmosphere when he declares, "Il benvenuto a tutto e gode -- Welcome to everyone and enjoy." And there is plenty to enjoy at this award-winning northern Italian restaurant that opened in 2002. The osso buco, a slow-cooked, braised veal shank with red wine, tomato sauce and fresh herbs served with saffron risotto, continues to be the most popular item on the menu. The house antipasto platter comes with marinated vegetables, artichoke hearts, sliced salami, mortadella, olives, fresh bufala mozzarella and roasted red peppers. Other favorites are clams and mussels sautéed with garlic, homemade lasagna, imported Parma ham wrapped over slices of melon, pasta e fagioli (Tuscan bean soup), tomato and avocado salad with roasted red bell peppers and kalamata olives, linguine with manila clams in a white or red sauce and homemade gnocchi (potato dumplings) in a gorgonzola cheese sauce. There also is rigatoni, grilled eggplant, chicken piccata, chicken marsala, veal scaloppini, pan-seared filet of sole, ravioli stuffed with ricotta cheese and spinach and grilled prime New York steak with rosemary and garlic. Most entrees are served with mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables. Gaetano's is open from 5 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, from 5 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 5 to 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. -- Jack Bulavsky
