There are several versions to the story as to where the event earned such a provocative name, according to Duane LaDuke, executive director of Helldorado Days.
"Helldorado came from back in the 1930s, when workers began construction of the Hoover Dam," LaDuke said. "They were building in Eldorado Canyon. Prospectors and miners were also looking for gold. When they didn't find their eldorado, their gold, they began to call the canyon Helldorado."
