Oranges ripen in autumn

Question: I would like to get your opinion on why my Trovita orange tree does not have juice oranges. The ones that I picked off this year are dry inside and pithy -- absolutely no good. What would be your guess why?

It sounds like the fruit was picked too late. The Trovita orange is a selection or a version of a Washington navel orange developed a number of years ago at the University of California at Riverside.

The fruit should be ready in mid- to late October and early November, contrary to what you may have read in literature.

It ripens just ahead of the Washington navel orange. It should do very well in desert climates provided it doesn't get too cold for it.

Bob Morris is an associate professor with the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension.
