With the 100-degree milestone already behind us, it's pool season in the Las Vegas Valley. With summer, however, comes the need for parents to practice water safety with their kids.

Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center is suggesting five tips for parents as their kids get ready to swim.

1. Watch the kids. Home swimming pools are magnets for children. Surround your pool with a fence at least 4 feet high. Supervise kids whenever they are around water. Children aren't waterproof!

2. In the pool, always swim with a buddy, preferably where there is a lifeguard on duty. Drains can create a dangerous suction --- keep kids away from them.

3. Learn to swim. The best thing anyone can do to stay safe in and around the water is to learn to swim.

4. Install a phone by the pool or keep a cordless phone nearby so that you can call 911 in an emergency. Also, post CPR instructions and your local emergency number in the pool area.

5. Know where the nearest hospital is and the quickest way to get there.
