PASSIONATELY PINK: Fighting for a cure
Boulder City goes on a crusade to raise awareness of breast cancer, fund research

Boulder City's slogan is "Clean, Green Boulder City," but on Oct. 24, it might as well have been "Clean, Pink Boulder City," when hundreds of observers and workers wore pink shirts to participate in the Passionately Pink for the Cure program.

With the aid of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Officer Jill Lagan spearheaded the day meant to bring greater awareness of breast cancer, a disease that will strike 1,270 women in Nevada this year and which has played a major role in the lives of thousands more who are survivors.

Slumping economy puts Emergency Aid in bind

Despite receiving sizable grants and loads of donated food, Emergency Aid of Boulder City is facing a financial crisis of its own these days, according to an agency official.

Sue McCullough, immediate past president of the organization, said that because of an increasing number of customers requesting financial assistance for temporary housing and utility payments, as well as transportation costs, the payouts are requiring Emergency Aid officials to siphon off the organization's own funds to pay for the higher cost of operations, which has McCullough concerned.
