The Rotary Club of Las Vegas Northwest will be seeking public support of Rotary International's $100 Million Challenge between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday at local supermarkets.
In Summerlin, locations include Albertsons at 8350 W. Cheyenne Ave., and Vons at 1940 Village Center Circle.
The fundraising effort is aimed at ending polio worldwide. Funds raised will match, dollar-for-dollar, a challenge grant recently awarded to the Rotary Club by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation that will provide $200 million to the global health initiative over the next three years.

NEW STORE OFFERS GEAR FOR SPORTS, OUTDOORS
Recreational Equipment Inc., better known as REI, opened on Nov. 7 at 720 S. Rampart Blvd., in the Boca Park Shopping Center.
The 28,000-square-foot, one-story location offers gear and apparel for camping, climbing, cycling, fitness, hiking, paddling, snow sports and travel.
REI Summerlin is the co-op's 105th location overall and joins a store in Henderson in serving more than 14,000 members within the Las Vegas area. The co-op first entered Nevada in 1999 with the opening of a store in Reno.
The new store features a seasonal gear rental department, a bike shop for quick assemblies or repairs, and a community room for outdoor-related presentations and events by the company and its nonprofit partners.

PARTICIPANTS CAN GET HELP TAKING THEIR LAST PUFF
As part of the Great American Smokeout, the Nevada Cancer Institute will have an educational booth from 8 a.m. to noon on Thursday at its campus, One Breakthrough Way.
Participants can learn about resources available through the institute, including free smoking cessation classes, a Heavy Quitters support group and how quitting now can extend smokers' lives and improve their health.
In Nevada, there will be an estimated 1,340 deaths from lung cancer in 2008 -- more than any other cancer deaths, according to the American Cancer Society.

DOCTOR TO RECEIVE $675K GRANT FOR CANCER RESEARCH
Dr. Hong Sun, a researcher with Nevada Cancer Institute, One Breakthrough Way, will receive a grant of $675,000 from the Department of Defense to study a new therapeutic approach to breast cancer based on her ongoing work on the IGF-I receptor protein.
Dr. Sun's proposal received a 9.9 score out of 10 in terms of scientific impact in the breast cancer field.
Advanced breast cancer is normally treated with cancer-killing chemotherapy drugs, but can lead to resistance in cancer cells to such drugs, resulting in recurrence, spread, and eventually death. Sun's research is looking to enhance the sensitivity of tumor cells to these cancer-killing agents.

Summerlin Hospital Medical Center has been selected by the National Research Corporation as a 2008-09 Consumer Choice Award winner. The award identifies hospitals that health care consumers have chosen as having the highest quality and image in more than 250 markets throughout the U.S.
The National Research Corporation surveyed more than 200,000 households. Their answers were weighted and tabulated to form the list of top hospitals. The margin of error in the survey is plus or minus 0.2 percent.
