We're all tightening our belts, but that doesn't mean you still can't go to restaurants. There are plenty of affordable eateries in Henderson.

MATTEO'S CAFE

Matteo's Cafe opened at 750 E. Pyle Ave., Suite 109, about four months ago. The decor reflects owner Matt Meyer's upbringing in beachy Southern California, but the burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, wraps, soups and salads have influences from all over the country.

There's a pastrami burger with pastrami, Swiss cheese, coleslaw and Thousand Island dressing, and a jalapeno teriyaki burger with homemade teriyaki sauce, Swiss cheese, grilled pineapple, jalapeno, lettuce and tomato. Each burger is $8.99. All meals are served with house fries, sweet potato fries or potato salad.

The menu also includes a Spam burger and a Chicago dog, each for $4.99. But the star of Matteo's menu are the po' boys.

"I just wanted to offer something you can't get in the area," Meyer said. "You can find some po' boys in town, but there isn't much variety."

All the po' boys, which are made with catfish, homemade crab cakes, fresh beer-battered cod and calamari or fresh battered rock shrimp tempura, are $9.99.

Meyer, who worked in fine dining before opening the cafe, said he priced the menu according to what the ingredients cost him and what he'd want to pay if he was a customer.

"The regular customers are keeping us alive," Meyer said. "They tell me, 'You're undercharging us and overfeeding us.' "

In addition to the regular menu, Matteo's has daily specials that range from $6.99 to $8.99.

Matteo's also has a kids' menu and malts, shakes and floats for $2.50 to $4.99.

Delivery is available. Matteo's is open from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. daily. For more information, call 982-8360 or visit www.matteoscafe.com.

BANGKOK 9

For inexpensive Thai cuisine in Henderson, there's Bangkok 9 at 663 N. Stephanie St.

Appetizers start at $4.95 for four egg rolls or six vegetable dumplings. A 12-piece appetizer combination costs $11.95 and includes two each of Golden Bags (fried rice pastry stuffed with chicken and vegetables and seasoned with curry powder), egg rolls, vegetable dumplings, traditional pot stickers, crispy shrimp and crab meat rangoons.

The menu also includes soups, salads, rice and noodle dishes. A bowl of chicken or shrimp vegetable soup is $5.95, and an order of crab fried rice, made with real crab meat stir-fried with rice, egg and scallions, is $9.95.

There are a dozen Thai curry entrees, with green, red or yellow curry from $7.95. There's also the Seafood Supreme curry, with shrimp, calamari, scallops and mussels, red curry paste and coconut milk. It's flavored with seasoned vegetables and sweet basil leaves and costs $13.95.

Bangkok 9 is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Sunday. For information, call 898-6881 or visit www.bangkok9togo.com.

HAVANA GRILL

Havana Grill offers authentic Cuban food at 8878 S. Eastern Ave., Suite 100.

Appetizers include tamal de maiz cubano, a corn and pork tamal wrapped in a corn husk and served with a mojo dipping sauce for $4.95, and chicharrones, which are fried pork skins, for $3.95. Sopa de pollo, a Cuban chicken soup with pasta and potatoes, is $3.95 a cup, and plantanos maduros, which are fried sweet, ripe carmelized plantains, are $4.95.

Havana Grill has a large sandwich menu, including ham and cheese croquetas on pressed Cuban bread, bread crumbs, onions, eggs and secret sauce for $10.95. All sandwiches are served with choice of mariquitas plantain chips or french fries.

The restaurant also has a large selection of chicken, beef, pork seafood and vegetarian entrees starting at $9.95.

Havana Grill is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday. For more information, visit www.havanagrillcuban.com or call 932-9310.

LA FOCACCIA

The best way to eat out for cheap is to find a restaurant's specials. Local Italian eatery La Focaccia's most expensive item is a rib-eye steak meal for $22, but its specials can make eating there cheaper than cooking at home.

La Focaccia, 8973 S. Eastern Ave., offers buy-one-get-one-free pizzas on Monday nights during football season; pizzas are $8.95 to $15. There are daily lunch specials for less than $13, and all-day family dining on Sundays.

"Times are tough, and this is a really good way to offer a great value," owner Giacomo Zarcone said.

Family-style dining is $20 per person and includes platters of appetizers with meats, salads and fish; a pasta course plater; a main course platter with pork chops, roasted chicken and grilled salmon with potatoes and vegetables; and a dessert platter.

"It's like being at home," Zarcone said. "Grandma puts the food on the table, and whoever is the fastest eats the most."

The restaurant, which specializes in stone-oven pizza, panini, pasta and salad, has many items imported from Italy.

Items range from $3.95 to $12.95, and meals are served with fresh bread.

The menu includes freshly baked focaccia, flatbread or ciabatta topped with grilled chicken breast, fontina cheese, warm spinach and sun-dried tomato aioli or any of the eatery's 32 panini choices. There also are make-your-own salad and make-your-own pizza menus.

La Focaccia, 650-9800, is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday though Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

STATION CASINOS

Station Casinos has a huge selection of restaurants, including many fine dining options, but there still are plenty of choices if you're watching your wallet.

The cafes at Green Valley Ranch, 2300 Paseo Verde Parkway, and Sunset Station, 1301 W. Sunset Road, offer three-course trifecta meal deals, which start at $9.99. Every meal starts with an appetizer. Entree selections range from spaghetti and meatballs to filet and shrimp. Dessert choices include cheesecake or chocolate cake. For an extra $7, diners can add a half pound of steamed crab legs to any meal.
