Dr. Shadia Koury's two main priorities are family and health. Strengthening both is what she does at her Centennial Hills practice, Chiropractic for Life, 7455 W. Azure Drive, Suite 120.
Koury offers a wide variety of treatment and services but specializes in chiropractic care for expectant mothers and children, a niche she sees growing industrywide.
"People are looking for it now," she said. "They're finding me online and it's all word of mouth. I think there is a paradigm shift going on where people are looking for alternatives to traditional health care, but not necessarily a lotion, potion or pill. This is just another one of those alternatives."
Chiropractic for Life has been open for almost a year in northwest Las Vegas. Koury previously worked as a chiropractor at the practice of Dr. Teresa Berry, who happens to be co-owner of the Vino 100 wine shop just down the street on Tenaya Way.
Koury, who lives a few miles from her practice and has called Las Vegas home for nine years, recently became the only chiropractor in the state to be certified by the Council of Chiropractic Pediatrics in the Academy of Chiropractic Family Practice.
"I wanted to give parents a complete wellness program for a nice, healthy lifestyle for the whole family," she said. "And it has to start with pregnancy. They're going to be happier, smarter babies when they come in peacefully."
In addition to the specialized treatment for moms-to-be, Koury's office provides a meeting space for a variety of like-minded groups, including Birth Year Network, Hypnobirthing, La Leche League and more.
The Chiropractic for Life office is built around a wide open room where Koury works with her patients, and additional rooms are available for massage therapists and pyschotherapy provided by a clinical social worker. Koury also offers allergy elimination, and the Japanese stress reduction technique of Reiki also is available.
"It's perfect for expecting moms because it helps restore harmony and balance, reduces stress and anxiety, and can really help with nausea," Reiki teacher Amy Barilla said. "And it really helps dads, too. We focus so much on moms sometimes, we forget that dads are stressed out, too."
Chiropractic for Life is open Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m., and on Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The schedule may seem strange, but for Koury, it's all about accommodating her patients and her family.
"Family is the most important thing. As long as I get my time with my family, I'm good," she said. "I'm just trying to help people incorporate the lifestyle I've chose to live into their lives."
