LIBRARY TEAMS WITH AQUARIUM TO PROMOTE CARD SIGNUPS

The Clark County Library plans to celebrate National Library Card Sign-Up Month through a partnership with the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay.

Sign up for a free library card now through Sept. 30 for a chance to win a birthday party for 35 guests at Shark Reef. Existing cardholders receive a $6 discount off the regular price of an adult admission or a $4 discount off the price of a regular child's admission at Shark Reef.

AUTHOR TO BE JOINED AT SIGNING BY QUEEN OF THE PIANO

WORKSHOP TO PROVIDE TIPS ON WRITING FOR TOTS TO TEENS

The Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators plan to host a one-day workshop for anyone interested in writing for kids on Oct. 18 at the College of Southern Nevada Charleston campus.

Workshop participants scheduled include Abigail Samoun, a project editor at Tricycle Press; Ellen Hopkins, a New York Times bestselling young adult fiction author; Michelle Parker-Rock, a non-fiction children's writer; and Linda Joy Singleton, a juvenile series author.

Cost is $90 for Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators members, $95 for non-members. Registration starts at 8:45 a.m. Pre-registration is recommended. Manuscript critiques and portfolio reviews also will be offered.

BOOK FESTIVAL PUTS OUT CALL FOR LOCAL AUTHORS

The Vegas Valley Book Festival isn't until Nov. 6-8, but organizers are already taking applications from writers interested in participating in the Nov. 8 Local Author's Expo downtown at the Fifth Street School. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the school's gallery space will be packed with tables for authors to present books. Exhibit space is free, but limited, and the deadline to apply is Sept. 1.
