BREAST CANCER WALK TO STEP OFF NEXT MONTH

The American Cancer Society's ninth annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer fundraising walk is set to begin at 8 a.m. on Oct. 4 at the JW Marriott, 221 N. Rampart Blvd.

There is no registration or fee for the noncompetitive 3.5-mile walk. Participants are asked to collect donations and bring them along on the morning of the walk.

Making Strides raises funds to support breast cancer research education, advocacy and patient services.

Last year, almost 5,000 walkers raised more than $350,000 for the fight against cancer.

FESTIVAL TO FEATURE CHALK ART, HANDCRAFTED ITEMS

The eighth annual Summerlin Art Festival is slated for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 27 and 28 at Summerlin Centre Community Park, 1800 S. Town Center Drive.

The weekend festival offers two events in one -- La Strada dell'Arte, which is adopted from Italian tradition, and Celebration of the Arts, an outdoor arts festival featuring more than 125 regional artists and craftsmen.

La Strada dell'Arte consists of chalk artists transforming the Summerlin Centre Community Park into an outdoor gallery. Watch sidewalks be turned into art. Chalk and knee pads will be available for $5.

The art festival portion will include a variety of handcrafted items, such as paintings, glass work, pottery, jewelry, metalwork, sculpture, dolls and woodcrafts.

Live entertainment will include the Academy of Nevada Ballet Theatre. Expect food art displays and ice carving demonstrations, as well as children's activities, living statues and roving entertainers. A wide variety of food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Parking and admission to the event are free.

UN-RUN RAISES FUNDS FOR FRIENDS OF RED ROCK

The Friends of Red Rock Canyon's Un-Run was held in August and raised $587.

The event, which doesn't require participants to do anything other than pay a $20 registration fee, requested of participants, "Leave your running shoes at home, leave yourself at home, prop your feet up in front of the telly and enjoy yourself, guilt free."

Participants received an Un-Run T-shirt in the mail with the slogan, "Too Hot to Trot."

Friends of Red Rock Canyon said it plans to hold the Un-Run annually.

EXPERT TO DISCUSS GENEALOGY DATA SECURITY

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Southern Nevada plans its monthly meeting for 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave. The session is open to the public.

The guest speaker will be John Fischer, whose presentation is titled Sourcing Standards for Genealogy and Computer Hardware Security.

Fischer has been involved in genealogy research for more than 30 years. He is retired from the Hewlett-Packard Corporation, where he was a computer and network specialist.

The meeting is open to the public.

NELLIS PLANS RETIREE APPRECIATION DAY

Nellis Air Force Base will host a Retiree Appreciation Day on Sept. 27. A ceremony is planned for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Thunderbird Hangar.

Retirees of all military services and their guests are invited. Aircraft displays, an information fair, health screenings, door prizes and food will be offered.

SUBMISSIONS WELCOME FOR RED ROCK CANYON PHOTO CONTEST

Friends of Red Rock and the Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, will jointly sponsor the 2008 Red Rock Canyon Photo Contest. This year's theme is nature and wildlife at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

The top award in various categories is $100.

Entries will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 3 and 4 at the Lloyd D. George Federal Building, 333 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

Entries will be received on a first-come, first-served basis; no more than 150 photo entries per category will be accepted.

To ensure entry in the contest, e-mail Vicki Sudduth at vsudduth@friendsofredrockcanyon.org to be placed on the participation list or register at http://www.friendsofredrockcanyon.org. The $5 fee per entered photo for adults, $3 fee per photo for teens and $3 fee per photo for children ages 3-12 will be accepted with the submission of prints Oct. 3 and 4. There is a maximum of four entries per person.

STATIONERY STORE UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

Jennifer Landaz and Peri Smith, owners of Meet and Greet Las Vegas, have purchased and assumed operations for Write Or Invite, 8250 W. Desert Inn Road, Suite E1.

MAH JONGG TOURNEY PLANNED

Jewish Community Center of Southern Nevada, 4794 S. Eastern Ave., plans its fifth annual Mah Jongg Tournament for 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 23 at the Red Rock Country Club, 2250 A Red Springs Drive.

The event includes a kosher-style buffet lunch and cash prizes. The fundraiser supports the center's educational, cultural, social and athletic programs. Free valet parking will be available.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., with the games starting at 10 a.m. Players must bring their own Mah Jongg cards and may bring their own Mah Jongg sets.

The entry fee is $55 for members and $60 for nonmembers. Players registering before Monday qualify for a $5 discount.

JOY OF SEX EXHIBIT DISPLAYED AT GALLERY

White Square Gallery Berlin -- Las Vegas is offering a new exhibit titled The Joy of Sex through Nov. 2. The gallery is located at 9440 W. Sahara Ave., Suite 180.

The title of the exhibit comes from the well-known sex education book of the same title by Alex Comfort.

The exhibit is curated by Johannes Hedinger and will contain explicit sexual content, and the material may not be appropriate for children younger than age 18, according to gallery staffers.

The gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.
