NO MORE FREE RIDES: Moving the masses
Art in the Park patrons will have to pay for shuttle bus service for first time in festival's history

Up until a couple weeks ago, Boulder City Hospital Foundation members were looking at the possibility of spending up to 20 percent of their Art in the Park proceeds for shuttle bus service, but the Regional Transportation Commission, which caused the dilemma, found a way to solve it.

The Transportation Commission simply created a special event route to solve the problem. Earlier this year, it was determined a federal regulation would be enforced that prohibits the free use of buses belonging to a federally funded public transportation agency, like the Transportation Commission, for special events when private charter bus service also is available.

Charging more for services might help hospital
Boulder City facility offers bargains compared to other area providers

Boulder City Hospital officials report the institution has lost an average of more than $500,000 a year for the last seven years, which has prompted them to ask local property owners to start subsidizing hospital operational costs through a voter-, county- and state-approved tax district.

However, Joseph Greenway, the person in charge of the state's center for collecting health-related data from Nevada's 32 acute-care hospitals, said he believes some or all of that loss could be made up if Boulder City Hospital started charging more for its medical and surgical services.
