Gabriel De La Rosa, 9, received the Principal's Award for academics for the third consecutive year at Thompson Elementary School, where he is in the third grade.

He likes soccer and karate, and hopes to be a movie director when he grows up.

Gabriel is the son of Arturo and Cecilia De La Rosa of Las Vegas.

Justin Singletary, 16, was named student of the month in arts and media at Chaparral High School for the month of October.

Singletary, a junior, has a 3.89 grade point average and has received 19 of 22.5 credits needed to graduate, not including credits he will receive for the first semester.

He is enrolled in the S.T.E.P. UP Program through the College of Southern Nevada, taking courses for his associate degree in education while still on his high school campus.

He maintains a 4.0 grade point average for his college courses.

Singletary is the son of Adam and Behrokh Singletary of Las Vegas.

Alex Curtas, 24, won first place and was published in the Best Student Essays, Nonfiction Student Review, at the University of New Mexico.

Curtas, a 2002 graduate of Advanced Technologies Academy, graduated from the University of New Mexico in 2008 with a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy, magna cum laude.

Curtas received a financial prize for his first-place essay, "The Critical Subject: A Poet in Philosopher's Clothing." It was one of more than 20 submissions in the research category, and eight were selected for publication.

Curtas is the son of Patricia Thacker and John Curtas, both of Las Vegas.

Conor Fitzpatrick has been named to the dean's list at Albion College in Albion, Mich. He is a sophomore, majoring in public policy with a concentration in the Gerald R. Ford Institute for Public Policy and Service.

Students named to the dean's list must achieve a grade point average of 3.5 or above at the completion of the semester.

Fitzpatrick, a graduate of Foothill High School, is the son of Richard and Laura Fitzpatrick of Henderson.
