Ordained minister John 3:16 Cook has lived in North Las Vegas for more than 25 years, and during that time, has created a reputation as an advocate for the homeless.

Cook opened and operated one of the largest missions in the state without the aid of government money, nearly 20 years ago.

The facility was shut down due to code violations after a few months.

Cook said that homeless ministry has been his life's mission.

A Baptist minister, Cook graduated with a doctorate from Trinity College.

Diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, Cook said that he considers his bid for the mayoral seat to be his last opportunity to make an impact in the community.

"I've cleaned up four to five other towns in my life," he said. "I've seen and done a lot. I know what it will take to clean up this town, and I can't be bought or sold. That's why I'm dangerous."

Cook has been married to magician and practicing Wiccan Magickal Marissa for the past 21 years.
