Ward 3 councilwoman Stephanie Smith, a Brigham Young University graduate, moved to Nevada in 1987. Smith was elected to city council in 1997, after moving to North Las Vegas in 1991.

Smith was elected to the Nevada Assembly in 1992 and served one term in the Legislature. She also served as a member of the Governor's Maternal and Child Health Board.

In July 2004, Smith completed the Harvard University Program for Senior Executives at the John F. Kennedy School of Government. Smith currently is a music educator in the Clark County School District.

Smith said her proven track record of standing up to powerful interests and willingness to fight to improve neighborhoods makes her the ideal candidate for the mayoral seat.

"I understand first-hand the struggles that people in North Las Vegas face," she said. "I have gained the experience and knowledge necessary to ensure a brighter future for all North Las Vegas residents."

Smith serves on the Southern Nevada District Board of Health, North Las Vegas Housing Authority Board and as chairwoman of the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition. She also serves on the Civilian Military Council of Southern Nevada and the board of the Nevada Arts Advocates.
