Into hell they bravely dash
Distance runners prepare to face down the devil in Lake Mead marathon

It's one thing to run five or 10 miles in the cool of the early morning before the summertime heat turns the desert floor into a broiler. But what about running a marathon at midday when the thermometer tops out around 110 degrees?

That's what a group of hardy athletes will do when they gather at Lake Mead National Recreation Area Saturday (start and finish at Boulder Beach) for the Running with the Devil event. Participants will compete in five distance options: 50 miles (roughly a double marathon), marathon (26.2 miles), half-marathon, 10K and 5K.

With death of Mike Geary, St. Jude's Ranch loses a friend

At first glance, The Geary Company office in Las Vegas looked the same on a recent afternoon as it always has. Half-brothers Jim McKusick and Dan Geary busily worked at their computers between meetings. Their 19-year-old nephew Kevin Geary caught up on accounting work at his desk while he ate lunch. Sepia-toned photos of their father and the company's founder, Richard Geary, adorned the walls.

What was missing was the fun, upbeat presence of the advertising agency's vice president and co-owner, Mike Geary.
