OPERA TO BE HELD AT UNLV
"Die Fledermaus," a light opera by Johann Strauss Jr., will be performed by the UNLV Opera Workshop at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 13 and 14 in Doc Rando Recital Hall, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway.
The opera will be sung in German with English dialogue and subtitles.
Admission is $10 for the general public and $8 for seniors and military personnel. UNLV students and Clark County students younger than 18 get in free.

The Educational Merit Foundation is seeking placement for German exchange students who will be coming to the Las Vegas area in spring 2010.
Families provide food and living space for a high school student between the ages of 15 to 18.
All students have medical insurance, spending money and expect to share the host family's daily life, including household responsibilities.

scholarships offered for medical professions
Medical Skills for Life Institute is offering 10 $5,000 scholarships and 10 $1,000 scholarships toward tuition to the first 20 students who enroll and are accepted by Nov. 16 to attend school to become a medical assistant or a phlebotomist.

ESSAY CONTEST OPEN TO U.S. HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
The Bill of Rights Institute is sponsoring the Being an American Essay Contest, which is open for submissions until Dec. 1.
The contest is open to students in grades 9 through 12 who are U.S. citizens or legal residents. All entries must be no longer than 750 words and answer the question, "What civic value do you believe is most essential to being an American?"
Winners will receive cash prizes, ranging between $5,000 and $250, and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. Teachers of the winning students will receive a matching cash prize.

Qualified families must apply for free and reduced lunches through the Clark County School District each academic year. Students eligible for the lunch program also qualify for free and reduced breakfast each school day.
