ALEXANDER DAWSON SCHOOL INVITES GRANDPARENTS TO MEET THEACHERS
Grandparents and Grandfriends Day takes place at 8 a.m. on Friday at The Alexander Dawson School, 10845 W. Desert Inn Road. Dawson grandparents and grandfriends are invited to come to school with students to meet teachers, complete classroom activities and hear the advanced choir and jazz band perform. A selection of antique cars from the Nethercutt Collection also will be on display outside the school.

mojave max contest open
The 2010 Mojave Max Emergence Contest is under way. Clark County students can enter their guesses online at www.mojavemax.com. Entrants are asked to predict the day, hour and minute that Mojave Max, the spokestortoise of the Clark County Desert Conservation Program, will emerge from his burrow in the desert after spending the winter months in brumation, the reptilian form of hibernation. In past years, Max has emerged between Feb. 14 and April 14. Each student is allowed one guess in the contest to win a package of prizes.
art institute of Las Vegas contest deadline approaching
The Art Institute of Las Vegas is looking for high school seniors interested in the fashion industry to enter its Passion for Fashion Competition.
One grand prize winner in each of the two categories of fashion design and fashion marketing, merchandising and retail management, will earn a full-tuition scholarship to study at a participating Art Institute.

HELP of Southern Nevada mentoring program accepting applications
Help of Southern Nevada is launching a mentoring program for residents who are living in the organization's transitional youth shelter. The next session will start in early 2010 and applications are being accepted.
Mentors are paired up in teams and will devote one to four hours per week to their mentee, supporting them in goal setting, life skills, career exploration and social skills.

Essay contest open to U.S. high school students
The Bill of Rights Institute is sponsoring the Being an American Essay Contest, which is open for submissions until Dec. 1. The contest is open to students in grades nine through 12 who are U.S. citizens or legal residents. All entries must be no longer than 750 words and answer the question, "What civic value do you believe is most essential to being an American?"
Winners will receive cash prizes, ranging between $250 and $5,000, and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. Teachers of the winning students will receive a matching cash prize.
