Could Las Vegas be a Petri dish for disease?
Local middle school students study epidemic possibilities

For about five weeks this summer, students from 37 middle schools researched how epidemics shape society. As the culmination of their studies, the children presented their findings to parents and friends on Aug. 13 inside the Vegas PBS Studios, 3050 E. Flamingo Road.

The showcase was part of the Alexander Dawson Foundation's Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning, which sponsors a summer enrichment program for high-achieving students. The program is free and is open to seventh- and eighth-graders each year. Kevin Cloud, the foundation's executive director, brings in teachers, authors and professionals from around the U.S. to instruct the participants.

Kids bookmaking workshop to serve as festival appetizer

The Vegas Valley Book Festival has become one of the area's bookmarks for fall and among its most anticipated events. But coordinators aren't satisfied with keeping the status quo. They are looking to step things up a notch.

That's why the festival's inaugural children's bookmaking workshop will debut Saturday in the Cultural Corridor .
