MOUNTAIN'S EDGE REGIONAL PARK RECEIVES NEARLY $8 MILLION IN FUNDING
The sale of federal lands provided $7.7 million to be used by Clark County for construction of the Mountain's Edge Regional Park. Plans for phase one call for about 15 acres of picnic facilities, open grass play areas, benches, shade structures, drinking fountains, restrooms, parking lots and 11/2 miles of trails.
County Commissioner Susan Brager said the southwestern valley currently has about 1.3 acres of park space for every 1,000 residents and that the county aims to roughly double park acreage.
The announcement of funding was made Oct. 21 by county officials. Money to begin the first phase of Mountain's Edge Regional Park was obtained through the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act, which mandates that the proceeds of the sale of federal lands in Nevada remain in the state to fund recreational projects.
Funding for phase two and subsequent park construction has not yet been identified. Plans call for the park eventually to include a cultural center, skate park, recreational center, amphitheater, ball fields, a playground with spray feature and additional parking.
The park is bounded by Mountain's Edge Parkway on the north, Durango Drive on the west, Cactus Avenue on the south and open desert on the east.
